Aspects affecting air quality in Almaty city and possible planning solution
Keywords:
air pollution, urban ventilationAbstract
In an interview, Zhanat Aitleu discusses the air pollution problems in Almaty, its causes, and possible solutions. The city, located in the pit of the Alatau foothills, has suffered from poor ventilation for many decades, and scientists from Almaty research institutes in the 1970s first voiced the need to solve this problem. Many of the scientific achievements of those years were lost in the 1990s due to the difficult economic situation that led to the disappearance of these research institutes. However, the basic building principles that can increase wind speeds in a city can be applied today and have been successfully tested in virtual city models. In addition to methods based on strategic high-rise development, new urban transport plans can help solve air pollution problems, easing the traffic load and, consequently, the volume of exhaust gas emissions into the atmosphere. While the industrial sector was the primary source of pollution in the second half of the twentieth century, today, the lion’s share of emissions comes from heavy traffic, primarily associated with many workers commuting to the city from the surrounding areas. Other ways to combat air pollution include increasing the number of artificial water reservoirs and fountains and establishing new squares and parks in the newly annexed areas of the city. At the end of the conversation, the issue of developing and introducing separate construction norms and building codes for the city of Almaty is raised, considering the peculiarities of the geographical location and seismic vulnerability.
